Activated carbon filtration systems

Activated carbon filters are can retain free chlorine, chlorinated compounds, ozone, surfactants, solvents, pesticides and other organic pollutants present in water.

The pressure filter consists of a device with a cylindrical body and two pseudo-elliptic convex ends, constructed in painted carbon steel or stainless steel if steam sterilization is required.

The filter medium consists of granular activated carbon with specific grain size selected to improve adsorption mechanisms, enabling the optimisation of the contact times required.

The filter is designed and constructed according to PED requirements for pressurised equipment.

The following accessories are situated within the filter:

  • A thick perforated plate that supports the filter media;
  • A set of specially designed nozzles fitted onto the plate to prevent leakage of filter media and ensure the uniform distribution of water during operation and backwashing;
  • A drainage system with a dedicated pipe for material detained by the filtration unit.

The filter is equipped with:

  • Service pipework;
  • Manholes for loading granules and routine inspections;
  • Pressure gauges on inlets/outlets;
  • Differential pressure switch in stainless steel.

Management of the filtration system is fully automated and controlled by a PLC.

The main applications for activated carbon filters include:

  • Dechlorination;
  • Adsorption of surface-active agents and solvents
  • Adsorption of pesticides and organic micro-pollutants
  • Adsorption of ammonia derivatives
  • Adsorption of chlorinated compounds
  • Adsorption of pollutants from industrial effluent
  • Reverse osmosis pre-treatment
  • Post-treatment of waste water
  • Odour removal
